Lewis pulls strings as United run riot

6:20am Wednesday 15th February 2012

Division Four West Hendy 7 Amman United 69 SOME clinical finishing from the Division Four West leaders put Hendy to the sword as visiting United ran riot.

The visitors ultimately put on an 11-try supershow, orchestrated by puppet- master Gavin Lewis who pulled all the strings with an outstanding performance.

However, the riches to come failed to materialise immediately, with Hendy giving as good throughout the early exchanges.

After a hard-fought opening 20 minutes, all the visitors had to show for their efforts was a solitary penalty and a slender 3-0 lead.

The in-form visitors made the trip without a large contingent of their regular backline, with Ryan Williams, Dean Williams, Adrian Thomas and Christian Madge all out, However, Amman’s strength in depth is evident these days, and, by halftime when they led 32-0, they had already clinched another four-try bonus point to stretch their lead at the top of the table, especially with second-placed Llanelli Wanderers’ match being postponed. Confident United spread the ball at will with little magician Lewis giving the Hendy defence a torrid time thanks to his running from deep and all round wizardry.

Among the hard-working forwards, back row man Sean Mangan stood out with his all round industry.

Amman scored some superb tries, including a brace each from backs Rhys Williams, Steff Phillips and Stuart Herbert, while Rhys Thomas and Lewis himself also grabbed a try each as the visitors ran away with it in the second half and Hendy wilted from the constant barrage.

Probably the best of Amman’s 11 touchdowns was finished off by Rhys Williams following a dazzling sidestepping run beginning from his own 22 by man-of-the-match Lewis.

Amman take a break from league action this Saturday for their fifth round Swalec Bowl last 16 tie at home against Gowerton (kick-off 2pm).

Looking ahead, Amman will take on St Clears on Wednesday, March 14 at Carmarthen Athletic RFC (7pm) in the semi-final of the Brains SA Plate.
