Ammanford slip in tense meeting
6:10am Wednesday 15th February 2012
Welsh League Football Division Two Ammanford 1 Dinas Powys 2 Nick Davies at the Recreation Ground AMMANFORD slipped to 11th in the league after narrowly losing to Dinas Powys in a tense encounter at the Recreational Ground on Saturday.
The hosts, who went into the game on the back of two consecutive wins at the Rec, were looking the brighter of the two sides in the opening 15 minutes and their opening spell of dominance resulted in five corners. But much to the home side’s frustration, they all came to nothing.
However the game ignited into life on 25 minutes as Dinas Powys hit a post with their fist real effort of the game.
But then Ammanford felt hard done by when the Powys centrehalf appeared to throw an elbow at Mathew Fisher.
Unfortunately for the hosts, the referee missed the incident and the visitors went unpunished.
Then, on 40 minutes, Ammanford were denied a penalty when Owen James was brought down in the box, but yet again Powys escaped without punishment.
There was further controversy on 30 minutes when a good strike by the Cardiff-based side rattled the crossbar.
Powys claimed the ball had then bounced over the line and into the keeper’s hands, but the officials disagreed.
In the second half, Powys scooped the ball over the crossbar, but it only took them another 12 minutes to open the scoring with a fine volley on 60 minutes after a good delivery, which Ammanford failed to clear.
And it was only eight minutes later that they doubled their lead, as they finished off a good move to slot past the keeper.
But it was Ammanford who scored next to set up a tense finish when left back Rhys Morgan fired home after a shot fell to his feet on 70 minutes.
Despite Ammanford scoring, it was Powys who left with three points after the hosts were reduced to ten men late on.
Ammanford next travel to Caerleon on March 3, kick-off is at 2.30pm.
