Betws invite all former players to special day
11:01am Thursday 2nd September 2010
Following a mainly successful pre-season Betws RFC will be looking forward to the new season but they will also have an eye to the past.
The Heol Felin side notched two out of three victories in their pre season friendlies, chalking up good wins against Swansea Uplands and Blaneau but were second best to Pontyddulais in their final encounter.
Never the less, new coach Tim Butler is confident that his sides can do well. The 1sts will open their campaign on September 4th away to Hendy whilst for the 2nds it will be a local derby hosting the Amman Quins.
As well as a general feeling of optimism about this season’s campaign, the club are also set to relive past glories when they host a Former Players day the following week, September 11th. The club has been trying to contact as many former players as possible and there is an open invitation to anyone who has played for the club to come along and reminisce.
The day is the brainchild of Richard Griffiths who has seen various players come and go in his years at the club.
"One of the strengths of Betws RFC is the friendliness of the club which tries hard to be an important part of the village. It is literally a family club and the current squad has about 10 players whose Fathers played for the club before them. The club has worked hard over the years to reach it’s current status despite set backs and this is a chance for us to thank former players, and for former players to see where the club is now. Many are still regulars here of course, but many have moved away or got out of the habit of watching matches. We hope that they will come along, enjoy the experience and in some cases reconnect. I’m sure everyone has stories from their time of playing and hopefully meeting up on this day will provide some more. If it is the success we hope then we are thinking of making it an annual event."
The Betws Former Players Day will be held at the club on September 11th when the 1st XV host Pembroke Dock Quins.
