Ammanford 16 Maesteg 17

11:25am Wednesday 17th March 2010

A LARGE Friday night crowd welcomed division two leaders Maesteg to the Rec on Friday night.

Owen Higgins, playing at 10, opened the scoring for Ammanford with a penalty for a 3-0 lead.

There was no score until ten minutes from half time, when Ammanford picked up their first yellow card of the evening (hooker Jason Rosser was shown yellow for ungentlemanly behaviour). Maesteg made the most of their indiscretion and their outside half evened the score from the resulting penalty.

Within minutes Maesteg were awarded yet another penalty and they edged in front 6-3. Ammanford were not going to lie down and even though they were one man short, came back with two further penalties from Owen Higgins to go into half-time with a 9-6 lead.

The second half began well for Ammanford when they were awarded a penalty try for a foul on Owen Higgins. Higgins converted to take Ammanford into a 16-6 lead. Maesteg replied with another penalty that took the score to 16-9.

Maesteg knew they had to up their game, which is exactly what they did, their pack started to take control and Chris Gums was used as a door mat in one huge Maesteg scrum. Ammanford defended superbly and one big tackle by Sean Miles shook the pick’s foundations but all this Maesteg pressure was bound to tell and it did. Ten minutes from time Ammanford were given their second yellow for persistent infringement and Tomos Wyn found himself leaving the field of play.

Maesteg continued to peg Ammanford back and eventually got the winning unconverted try with only minutes remaining.
