'Ammanford traders must do their bit for town'
10:00am Sunday 5th February 2012
WE’RE ALL in the same boat!
That is the message from Ammanford town councillors to traders who have put forward a raft of suggestions aimed at bringing more people into the town.
Free parking on Fridays and Saturdays, a bigger open-air market and more hanging baskets were just some of the ideas raised at a meeting of traders last month.
They also called for the Christmas fireworks display to be scrapped in favour of improved festive lights.
CllrWendy Evans said councillors shared traders’ concerns, but their hands were largely tied.
“We here in the town council are as frustrated as anyone,” she said. “We asked for troughs around Ammanford Square and that ideas was turned down by the Trunk Road Agency.
“Talk is cheap – it’s all very well the traders saying they want more Christmas lights and more hanging baskets, but they have got to contribute.”
Cllr Jane Potter felt the way forward was for traders and town councillors to work together.
“We are all trying to improve the town,” she said. “As far as the regeneration of Ammanford is concerned it would certainly help if people didn’t have to pay parking charges.”
