Service aims to end all annoying calls
5:30pm Friday 27th January 2012
LOCAL MP Jonathan Edwards is encouraging households to consider registering their details with the telephone preference service to put an end to unsolicited or marketing phone calls.
The service is free and features an official central opt-out register on which households can record their preference not to receive unsolicited or marketing calls.
It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities and voluntary groups) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the service unless they have the consent of the household to do so.
Mr Edwards said he had been contacted by residents within the Llandybie area who have been plagued with nuisance telephone calls and that he was keen to specifically promote the service for those households which have elderly, more vulnerable residents.
“Such phone calls can cause great distress to households with elderly, more vulnerable residents,” he said.
“The telephone preference service is a free and easy service which puts an end to unsolicited phone calls to landlines and mobiles, and will be effective just one month after registering.
“Registration can be done over the phone or online, and can easily be carried out on behalf of relatives that may not be able to do so themselves.
“Many households are receiving an increased volume of unwanted marketing calls.
“I would therefore encourage those who wish them to stop, to register.”
