Saron shopper's anger over Tesco treatment
7:00am Thursday 2nd September 2010
AN ANGRY shopper from Saron has accused Tesco of treating disabled people "like second-class citizens".
Janet Biddles says she was upset to be told her 89-year-old disabled mum would have to be pushed into a corner of the café in Ammanford's Tesco.
Upset Janet claimed staff had been following instructions after a young boy injured himself tripping over a wheelchair the previous day.
"No-one puts my mum in a corner - Tesco are discriminating against disabled people," Ms Biddles told the Guardian. "She always liked to kook out of the café window.
"Ninety-nine per cent of the staff are wonderful, but I was left terribly upset by this.
"It's not like my mum's wheelchair was causing an obstruction. What's happened is that Tesco have cut down the size of the café area by stocking cheap goods there."
A Tesco spokesman said: "We always aim to look after the comfort and safety of all our customers, especially those in wheelchairs. "Unfortunately we did not get it right this time. We have apologised to Mrs Biddles and we will be sending her and her mother some flowers."
